Article- Privatization in and of Higher Education by D. Bruce Johnstone

Link to article- http://gse.buffalo.edu/fas/johnston/privatization.html

Summary- This article helps you see the negative effects of greater privatization and how these effects can hurt students by turning the student into a consumer. It also shows that the goal of privatization is to make a profit and colleges will do whatever it takes to reach that goal even if it comes at the expense of the student. For example some departments and services such as research might be cut off because they are not bringing in profit and this will have an impact on the students. This article also shows the transition from high publicness that existed before to the gradual movement towards high privateness that is taking place today.

Quotes- "Privatization also suggests the adoption of management practices associated with private business, such as contracting out, or "outsourcing" (i.e. turning to private firms to perform non-academic services such as printing, food services, bookstore operations, or general building maintenance)"
"Adopting a culture of service to the student as a client"
"Trimming departments and other units that seem not to be attracting students or research dollars, or otherwise justifying them being "carried" by the units that do"

Key Terms:
auxiliary enterprises- Includes self-supporting operations of the institution that exist to furnish a service to students, faculty, or staff, and that charge a fee that is directly related to, although not necessarily equal to, the cost of the service
anti authoritarianism- is opposition to authoritarianism, which is defined as a a form of social organization characterized by submission to authority, and to authoritarian government
